Several large families of geese - this one we counted 14 goslings! |
After spending the night at Cass Lake near Bemidji, MN, where we were able to do laundry and enjoy an early evening, we headed east again. We arrived at Big Sandy Lake in the early afternoon, and poked around the lake looking for old cabins where my family may have stayed nearly 50 years ago. Of course, everything has changed - where once the cabins were far apart and the shore was undeveloped (as far as I recall), now all the lakeshore parcels sport cabins large and small, docks extend out into the lake and roads are pretty good.
We decided that we wouldn't find "the" cabin, so we turned back and found our overnight campground.
Since it was Bill's birthday, we hauled out the barbecue and cooked steaks and baked potatoes, started a fire so we could roast marshmallows, and settled in for a lovely lakeside evening, topped off with a glorious sunset and cherry pie a la mode.

This is where we stayed at a cabin when I was about 6-7. |
Today is a foggy, cool day for our drive up the North Shore of Lake Superior, so not a great day for photography, sadly. Our SB neighbors recommended a stop at the Mocha Moose, and we just enjoyed a hearty lunch of homemade tomato basil soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, a midwest staple! We'll make it to Grand Marais this evening in time for dinner at The Angry Trout, where we hear we'll be able to see otters frolicking right below the restaurant. We're hoping for fresh trout, which would be our first on this trip. Bill would also be OK with the walleye, too...we'll see!
Aside from mosquitoes and ticks, we're enjoying the great outdoors in this area. Thank goodness for Deep Woods Off and a smoky campfire, which repelled all those pesky things (had to pick another tick off poor Sascha, though, but it hadn't latched on, fortunately).
