Sascha enjoyed barking at the little waves - queen of the lake! |
The last two days have been spent oohing and aahing over scenic turns in the road, visiting peaceful rocky beaches and enjoying spring splendor as we follow the north shore of Lake Superior around into Ontario, finally arriving at Sault Ste. Marie this sunny afternoon.
We thought often of the early fur traders and settlers who trudged no more than 15-20 miles a day through rugged, bug-infested forests just north of here along Dawson's Trail, the first road cut through the wilderness from Ontario to Fort Gary in St. Boniface (now Winnipeg). Many settlers would start their journey by boat through the great lakes, arriving at Ft. William in Thunder Bay before heading west along the trail.
As we spray on our Deep Woods Off, turn off our gentle music and step outside our very livable RV, we are aware at how easy our lives are in comparison to those hearty, brave souls who were our ancestors! What has taken us three easy days in heated comfort must have taken them months...and they were not even close to their final destination. My great-great grandparents made this trip with very little capital (and even that was swindled from them), and knew that at the end of the trip, they would have to secure a homestead of their own, then cut trees to build their one-room log cabin before the bleak and blustery North Dakota winter set in. We've pulled into a quiet, wooded campsite, plugged in our electricity, and will have a stir-fry of shrimp and fresh vegetables for dinner; bacon and eggs for breakfast. We'll sleep on a bed equipped with memory foam for comfort. Our gas, campsite, and food charged with our Visa earning travel points. We are admittedly very spoiled!
